The film Wong made most quickly is, fittingly, his breeziest, but that’s not to discount a finely woven tapestry of split-second chance and metropolitan suffocation, the alternately lovely and garish city of Hong Kong a precise metaphorical playground for the mixed-up lives of two cops, a criminal, and one service counter worker hoping to change their lives for the better. Its use of a two-pronged narrative is not without unfortunately specious qualities the first half always flows more concretely than a more rambling, less direct second we could never hear “California Dreamin’” again and be just fine - all of these are true, but Chungking Express still lands so high for the purity of its emotions and wildness of its vision. From that point on her infamous occupation became simply “literary forger.” – Jared M. During the early 1990s when she was down on her luck professionally, financially, and personally, a fateful discovery occurred that would ultimately ensure her name would no longer be accompanied by “author” in the history books nor her own 2008 memoirs. Israel also wrote as some of her subjects too.

Check out this week’s selections below and an archive of past round-ups here.Ĭan You Ever Forgive Me? (Marielle Heller)ĭo you have a Lee Israel work on your shelf? What should be a matter of owning one of her books or not since she was a notable author of biographies who hit the New York Times Best Sellers list, things get much more complicated when you look closer to see she wrote more than just about the likes of Dorothy Kilgallen and Estée Lauder. But for those encountering Leung for the first time in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and eager to see more, all of these should be considered essential viewing. With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options - not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves - we’re highlighting the noteworthy titles that have recently hit platforms. Leung (often identified by his full name, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, to avoid confusion with fellow Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-fai), is getting a lot of attention for his work in the new Marvel superhero epic “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” As Shang-Chi’s estranged father and one of Marvel’s more notorious supervillains, the Mandarin, Leung gives a playful, brooding and ultimately devastating performance that’s even more resonant - emotionally, aesthetically, iconographically - if you’ve seen some of his others.

(Many of them are available in Criterion Collection’s lavish Wong Kar-wai box set, which was released earlier this year.)īut if Leung has been Wong’s most steadfast on-screen muse, over the past 40 years he’s racked up credits with no shortage of other noteworthy filmmakers, including Hou Hsiao-hsien, John Woo, Ang Lee, Zhang Yimou and Tran Anh Hung. After “Days of Being Wild,” Wong and Leung went on to make six more features together, a hopefully unfinished collaboration that cemented them both as world-cinema titans. That quietly heart-stopping introduction/farewell marked the start of something extraordinary. He’s all slippery elegance and wily charm, someone whose mere presence renders words superfluous. Still, you can tell a lot about him just from the way he buffs his nails, runs a comb through his hair and casually slips a deck into his pocket.

Who this man is and how he relates to the other characters in this drifty ’60s Hong Kong roundelay is a mystery. In the movie’s final moments, the writer-director Wong Kar-wai turns the camera on a character we haven’t met yet: a handsome young cardsharp in a low-ceilinged flat, preparing for a night on the town. Remarkably, the entrance and the exit are the same scene. In the swooningly beautiful 1990 film “Days of Being Wild,” Tony Leung gets one of the greatest entrances - and exits - ever accorded an actor in a single movie.
